What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive system of healthcare that has been practiced for thousands of years. TCM is based on the idea that maintaining harmony and balance within the body is essential for optimal health. Imbalances and disruptions in the flow of qi contribute to illness. TCM restores balance and promotes the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

TCM Modalities

Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body. These points are known as acupoints and are interconnected along pathways called meridians. Acupuncture stimulates these points to move qi and blood through these pathways and activate the body’s innate healing mechanism.

Gua sha

Gua sha is a TCM technique that involves scraping or stroking the skin with a smooth-edged massage tool to promote blood circulation and relieve tension in muscles and tissues.

Fire Cupping

Fire cupping is a form of TCM therapy in which glass cups are heated to create suction on the skin’s surface. Cupping promotes blood circulation, reduces inflammation, and eases muscle tension and pain. It can also be used for immune system imbalances and common colds.

Cupping can leave temporary marks on the skin that will typically fade within 7-10 days.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a TCM therapy that involves the burning of a dried herb called mugwort near or on specific acupuncture points. This gentle heat therapy helps warm and invigorate the flow of qi and blood and can be used for pain relief, strengthening the immune system, and encouraging a fetus to turn from breech presentation to a head-down position.
